JEFFERSON LETTERS TO EZRA STILES ELI

> i have found a copy of a book by a ezra stiles ely, in 1811, and signed by > the author, Mr. Ely, who gave it to a friend Mr. Ralph R. Gourley. I found > out that Thomas Jefferson wrote a letter to Mr. Ely about religion, > and I know from the book that he was a "preacher to the hospital of the city > of New York". If you know anything further about Mr. Ely , I would > appreciate your forwarding the information to me. I have not been able to find any letters by Thomas Jefferson to Ezra Stiles Eli, however Jefferson did write letters to Dr. Ezra Stiles (also spelled Styles). It may be that Ezra Stiles Eli was named after Dr. Ezra Stiles, who I believe was a university president, I believe of Yale. There are three letters of Jefferson to Dr. Stiles in the Memorial Edition of Jefferson's Writings (Lipscomb & Bergh, eds., available in large public and university libraries; also now avaialble on the Internet), but I have not been able to find any letters to any person with the last name of Eli.
